fünf installationen entmystifizierten den kunstbegriff und den musealen ort.

der eingangsbereich der neuen galerie-, graz: eintretende wurden von zwei videokameras erfasst, einmal von hinten beim zutritt auf die eingangstür, und einmal von vorne während des eintretens in den galerieraum. diese beiden unterschiedlichen aufnahmen wurden auf zwei monitore übertragen. die besucher/innen konnten sich selbst für wenige augenblicke gleichzeitig von hinten als hineintretende und von vorne als hereinkommende auf den monitoren sehen. in dieser perspektive kulminierte für einen kurzen moment die eigene vergangenheit und die eigene zukunft in der eigenen gegenwart.

five installations demystify the concept of art and the museum site.
video-live
the entrance area of the neue galerie, graz. people entering are recorded by two video cameras, once from behind when approaching the entrance and once from in front when entering the gallery space. these two different shots were transmitted to two monitors. the visitors could for a few moments see themselves on the monitors simultaneously from behind on approaching and from the front when coming inside. from this perspective for a short moment a visual culmination was created of one’s own past and one’s own future in one’s own present.

in einem ausstellungsraum der neuen galerie graz saßen 8 mitarbeiter/innen des museums auf nebeneinander aufgestellten stühlen. diese situation wurde von einer videokamera aufgezeichnet und gleichzeitig auf einen, gegenüber der sitzenden gruppe positionierten monitor übertragen. die erste person verfügte über eine polaroidkamera mit einer vollen packung für 8 aufnahmen. jede person machte ein polaroid vom gegenüber stehenden monitor und reichte die kamera gemäß der sitzordnung von rechts nach links weiter. erst nachdem sich die 8 polaroids entwickelt hatten, verließen die 8 handelnden personen ihre plätze und wurden durch die von ihnen produzierten polaroids ersetzt. für die dauer der ausstellung wurde die videoaufzeichnung des polaroidshootings in einem loop auf diesem monitor abgespielt.

in one of the exhibition spaces of the neue galerie graz, 8 employees of the neue galerie sat on chairs placed next to each other. this situation was recorded by a video camera and simultaneously transmitted to a monitor positioned opposite the seated group. the first person had a camera with a full pack for 8 shots. each person took a polaroid of the monitor opposite them and handed on the camera from right to left according to the seating plan. once the 8 polaroids had developed the 8 people involved left their places and were replaced by the polaroids they had produced. for the duration of the exhibition the video recording of the polaroid shooting was played on this monitor in a loop.

zwei im raum diagonal aufgestellte tonbandgeräte bildeten die technische ausstattung der installation. ein gerät war auf empfang, das andere auf wiedergabe geschaltet. die länge das tonbandes entsprach exakt den längenabmessungen des raumes. das wiedergabegerät reproduzierte laufend den satz: „»dieses tonband ist die optische und akustische vermessung dieses raumes“«, während das auf empfang geschaltete gerät diesen text mit den durch das publikum verursachten und sonstigen geräuschen aufnahm, und damit die reproduktion des statements schlussendlich bis zur unkenntlichkeit veränderte.

two tape recorders placed diagonally in the space provided the technical equipment for the installation. one recorder was switched to receive, the other to replay. the length of the tape corresponded exactly to the lengths of the space. the replay recorder reproduced once sentence constantly: “this tape is the optical and acoustic measurement of this space”, while the recorder switched to receive recorded this text along with the noises caused by the public and other sources, ultimately changing the reproduction of this statement beyond recognition.

20 stühle waren auf einem ansteigenden podium aufgestellt. für den zeitraum von 20 tagen (dauer der ausstellung) saß jeden tag eine andere person auf einem ihr zugewiesenen stuhl. dieser ablauf wurde fotografisch dokumentiert. das ergab pro tag und sitzung ein bild. dieses bild wurde am folgenden tag an der leeren rückwand des podiums angebracht. das foto des tages 2 – mit dem protagonisten vondes tages 2–enthielt das foto des protagonisten 1, etc.

20 chairs were set up on an elevated podium. for the duration of 20 days (the length of the exhibition) a different person sat on an allocated chair every day. this procedure was photographed. this produced one image per day and sitting. this picture was fixed to the empty back wall of the podium the following day. the photo of day 2 – with the protagonist from day 2 – included the photo of protagonist 1, etc.
polaroid-installation
der künstler saß vor einer wand, auf der drucke fixiert waren, die den sitzenden künstler mit einem polaroid in der hand zeigten. diese abgebildete haltung nahm der künstler real ein, indem er ein bild von der rückwand abnahm und besucherinnen und besuchern auf anfrage überreichte.
dieser übertragungsvorgang wurde wiederum von einer polaroidkamera festgehalten. diese polaroids wurden ihrerseits auf der gegenüberliegenden wand spiegelbildlich angebracht. die beiden wände bildeten nach der aktion (dauer: ca. 2 stunden) das produkt der überwindung der trennung zwischen produzent und konsument.
polaroid-installation
the artist sat in front of a wall where prints were fixed showing the sitting artist with a polaroid in his hand. the artist actually assumed the position shown, taking down a picture from the wall and giving it to visitors on request.
this transfer procedure was in turn captured on a polaroid camera. these polaroids were then fixed to the opposite wall in a mirror image. after the action (which lasted about 2 hours) the two walls formed the product of overcoming the division between producer and consumer.
